Range Description This species is known only from Sierra de Los Tuxtlas, southern Veracruz, Mexico. The type locality is recorded as 900-1,200m asl.
Habitat and Ecology The primary habitat is lowland tropical humid rainforest; it seems to live on the ground and under leaf-litter. Breeding takes place by direct development.
Population It is an uncommon species.
Population Trend decreasing
Major Threats The high rate of transformation of original forest habitat in this area is notorious, and deforestation for the cultivation of coffee, fruits and tobacco is rapidly increasing.
Conservation Actions The range of this species is wholly within Reserva de la Biósfera Sierra de Los Tuxtlas, although logging is taking place within this area. A survey to evaluate the population status of this population in Los Tuxtlas is needed, and real protection of the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas and the surrounding areas is urgent. This species is protected by Mexican law under the "Special Protection" category (Pr).
Red List Status Critically Endangered (CR)
Rationale Listed as Critically Endangered because its Extent of Occurrence is less than 100km2, all individuals are in a single location, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat in the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas.
Taxonomic Notes This species was previously included in the genus Eleutherodactylus (Crawford and Smith 2005).
