(Click for family gallery)This ancient family is endemic to central and southern India, especially in the biodiversity hotspot of the Western Ghats range. Most of these species were discovered in recent years (2010's) and some authors believe there is more cryptic diversity to be discovered.

- Occurs terrestrially in leaf litter or streams in tropical forests
- Morphological characters include: oval pupils, median lingual tubercle, distinct tympanum of varying proportions with supratympanic fold, partial dorsal skin folds or prominent skin warts present, and Y-shaped terminal phalanges with discs and distinct dorsoterminal grooves
- Females tend to be larger than males; males have femoral glands and spicules on the margins of the jaw and/or chest region
- Many species appear most active at night
- Distribution limited to central and southern India, especially in the Western Ghats
