(Click for family gallery)The family Hylodidae occurs in northwestern Brazil to southern Brazil and northern Argentina. One unusual member of this family, Hylodes asper, lives in noisy environments near waterfalls. Males call, but also communicate territoriality by intentional foot-flagging (alternate slow waving of each rear foot high in the air; see Hylodes asper species account for video).
This family is sister taxon to Alsodidae.
