Hylodes fredi is known only from Ilha Grande (23 09' S, 44 30' W), an island belonging to the Municipality of Angra dos Reis, southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil (Canedo and Pombal, 2007).

The new species is known to occur within the Atlantic forest domain.

No major threats are known for this species, although it is only known to occur in an island, Ilha Grande.
The entire island is contained within the Ilha Grande Biological Reserve.
