Bufotes turanensis (Hemmer, Schmidtler & Böhme, 1978)
family: Bufonidae
genus: Bufotes
Species Description: Stoeck, M., Moritz, C., Hickerson, M., Frynta, D., Dujsebayeva, T., Eremchenko, V., Macey, J.R., Papenfuss, T.J. and Wake, D.B. 2006. Evolution of mitochondrial relationships and biogeography of Palearctic green toads (Bufo viridis subgroup) with insights in their genomic plasticity. Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 41: 663-689.
Taxonomic Notes: Bufotes shaartusiensis synonomized with B. turanensis after Dufresnes C et al. 2019. Fifteen shades of green: the evolution of Bufotes toads revisited. Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 141: 106615. This diploid species is thought to have been involved in the origins of tetraploid B. pewzowi by hybridization with diploid B. turanensis, with tetraploid B. oblongus by an independent hybridization event with B. turanensis, and with triploid B. baturae by yet a third hybridization event with B. turanensis (see several publications by Stoeck and coauthors: Evolution 2006 Mol Phyl Evo, 2010 Evol, 2012 PRSB, 2015 Heredity, 2015 J Biog.).
