Range Description

This species is known from Cordillera Central of Colombia of Departments of Tolima and Quindío. Also, there are a few records reported as this species in Valle del Cauca (W. Bolívar pers. comm. August 2016), however confirmation with museum specimens is still necessary and therefore these records have not been included in the calculation of EOO. It occurs between 3,350–3,800 m asl (M. Bernal pers. comm. August 2016). Its EOO is 760 km2 and all individuals are considered to occur at four to five threat-defined locations.

Habitat and Ecology

This species occurs in sub-páramo and páramo areas, under rocks, logs, and in the roots of grasses among Espeletia. It breeds by direct development.

Population

It is an uncommon species. Due to ongoing decline in the extent and quality of habitat, the population is suspected to be decreasing.

Population Trend

decreasing

Major Threats

Habitat loss caused by agriculture activities and cattle grazing (and in particular, burning of the páramo in order to cause the grass to grow faster for the cattle to graze upon) are considered major threats.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
Part of its range includes Parque Nacional Natural Las Hermosas.

Conservation Needed
Further habitat protection is required within its distribution.

Research Needed
Further research in population trends, ecology, threats and distribution are recommended for the species.

Red List Status

Endangered (EN)

Rationale

Listed as Endangered because its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 760 km2, it occurs in four to five threat-defined locations and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat due to agriculture activities, cattle grazing and both controlled fires and wildfires.
