Description

Pristimantis maculosus ranges in SVL from 17.8-19.2 mm (three males) and 23.8-26.3 mm (two females). Pristimantis maculosus has the following combination of characters: skin of dorsum is smooth except for low pustules in dark markings; no dorsolateral folds; venter areolate; tympanum visible; snout short and subacuminate in dorsal view and round in lateral view; interorbital space broader than upper eyelid; eyelid with small warts; no cranial crests; vomerine odontophores small and low; males with vocal slits and nuptial pads; first finger shorter than second; discs moderate sized with largest on the outer fingers; fingers have lateral keels; small ulnar tubercles present; two metatarsal tubercles, inner oval, three times size of outer, many supernumerary plantar tubercles; toes bearing lateral keels. Dark brown above and below, flanks and concealed limb surfaces black with large pale spots. Spots white in life.

The head is narrower than the body and wider than long. Skin of upper eyelid rugose with one slightly larger more conical wart toward margin of eyelid. Tympanum superficial, annulus distinct and separated from eye by distance equal to tympanum length.

Pristimantis maculosus resembles P. scoloblepharus in having pale spots in the groin. But they differ in that P. maculosus lacks the conical tubercles on the upper eyelids and has a shorter snout.

Individuals of this species were collected in the Municipio Belmira, Departamento Antioquia, Colombia at 2620 m and in the Municipio de Sonson, Departamento Antioquia, Colombia at 2560 m.

Life History, Abundance, Activity, and Special Behaviors
This species was found on low vegetation on only two occasions along streams in primary forest.
