Oophaga speciosa (Schmidt, 1857)
Splendid Poison Frog | family: Dendrobatidae subfamily: Dendrobatinae genus: Oophaga |
Species Description: Schmidt, O. 1857. Diagnosen neuer Frösche des zoologischen Cabinets zu Krakau. Sitzungsberichte der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe 24: 10–15. | |
Etymology: In 2011, the genus Dendrobates was subdivided into seven genera, including the new genus Oophaga by Brown et al. (2011). The origin of the genus name, "Oophaga", comes from the Greek words, "oon" and "phagein", meaning "egg" and "eat", respectively (Ortiz et al. 2018). |

Life History, Abundance, Activity, and Special Behaviors This frog exhibits uniparental care. Females deposit eggs in leaf litter, and once the eggs hatch, the females carry the tadpoles to small accumulations of water, formed in the leaf/stem axils of plants. Females return to feed tadpoles with infertile eggs (Summers 1999). It is common for males to be very aggressive when defending territories for foraging and oviposition sites (Wells 2007). Trends and Threats Relation to Humans Possible reasons for amphibian decline General habitat alteration and loss
