Range Description

This species is known only from Monts de Cristal in northwestern Gabon at 460–550 m Asl and its confirmed range has an EOO of 112 km2. Specimens from Equatorial Guinea could potentially be attributed to this species, but due to the lack of vouchers, further surveys and molecular studies are required to confirm this (M.-O. Rödel pers. comm. July 2016) and this part of its range been coded as "presence uncertain" in the range map.

Habitat and Ecology

This species has been found only in primary forest under rocks along streams in deep, narrow valleys. It breeds in fast-flowing, rocky streams by larval development.

This species is only known from two specimens in Gabon, and the population trend is unknown.

Population Trend

Major Threats

This species is at risk from habitat loss due to smallholder farming activities and logging.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
This species occurs in Monts de Cristal National Park.

Conservation Needed
Protection of forest in the National Park is required.

Research Needed
Further surveys are required to determine the true extent of this species range and to clarify the taxonomic identity of the Equatorial Guinea records.

Red List Status

Endangered (EN)

Listed as Endangered because its extent of occurrence (EOO) 112 km2, all individuals are in fewer than five locations, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat.

Taxonomic Notes

We follow Rödel and Pauwels (2003) in provisionally assigning records of Leptodactylodon albiventris from Equatorial Guinea (De la Riva 1994) to this newly described species.
