Range Description

This species has been recorded at two localities in the western flank of the Serranía de Perijá in Colombia, between 930 and 1,800 m asl (Lynch 2008). Its EOO is 2,822 km2 and it is considered to occur in two threat-defined locations. It is necessary to evaluate the taxonomic status of all Cryptobatrachus species from Serranía de Perijá because there could be synonyms between species from Colombia and Venezuela (F.L. Meza-Joya pers. comm 2017).

Habitat and Ecology

There is limited ecological information on this species. However, like other members of its genus, it is probably associated with streams and waterfalls in montane forest. It has been found near waterfalls (Lynch 2008). It is expected to carry exposed eggs on its back and reproduce by direct development, as with other congeners.

Population

There is a lack of population information regarding this species, but in 2012, during a short survey in Vereda Puerto Rico, municipality El Molino, Guajira Department, Colombia, it was a very common species, with 54 adult individuals observed in four person-hours (F.L. Meza-Joya pers. comm. August 2016). Due to ongoing decline in the extent and quality of habitat, the population is suspected to be decreasing.

Population Trend

decreasing

Major Threats

Habitat loss appears to be the most probable threat for the species due to mining activities in southern locality, and logging and goat livestock in northern locality.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
It has not been recorded from any protected areas.

Conservation Needed
Improved habitat protection is required at sites where this species is known to occur.

Research Needed
More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, ecology, and threats. Further taxonomic research of all Cryptobatrachus species from Serranía de Perijá is needed to determine whether synonyms exist between species from Colombia and Venezuela (F.L. Meza-Joya pers. comm 2017).

Red List Status

Endangered (EN)

Rationale

Listed as Endangered because of its extent of occurrence (EOO) 2,822 km2, it occurs in two locations, and there is a continuing decline in the area and quality of its habitat.

Taxonomic Notes

Cryptobatrachus remotus (Infante-Rivero et al. 2009 "2008"), could be a junior synonym of this species based on preliminary evidence (Castroviejo-Fisher et al. 2015, Meza Joya pers. comm. August 2016).
