Etymology: Named after Prof. Wenyuan Qu, Henan Normal University, in honor of his contributions to biological research in Henan Province, China. The species' type locality is the headwaters of the Huai River, in the Funiu and the Tongbai-Dabie Mountains of Henan Province and thus its common name reflects this.

Rana qui is distributed along the eastern edge of the Funiu Mountains, the northern slopes of the Tongbai-Dabie Mountains, within the headwaters of the Huai River and its tributaries (elevations of 111 - 611 m).
