This species was featured in News of the Week 16 December 2024:

Frog vision and ecology match their glowing properties! Whitcher et al (2024) more than tripled the number of frog species tested for fluorescence. Biofluorescence was ubiquitous; the authors recorded at least a low-level fluorescent signal from every tested individual. Here is what analysis of over 17,000 spectrometer recordings revealed. They found that blue light produced the most intense fluorescence and met all criteria for ecological significance. Frog fluorescence is absorbing blue light, the wavelengths most abundant at twilight (the environment in which most frogs are active) and re-emitting that light at wavelengths that match frog vision in this environment. The green fluorescent signal maximizes frog visual sensitivity while also maximizing contrast with the background environment. So, fluorescence may allow frogs to increase their conspicuousness only in specific environments or only to specific individuals (i.e., this fluorescence may be a signal that only other frogs can see in a twilight environment but one that potential predators cannot). With evidence of tuning to the ecology and sensory systems of frogs, their results suggest frog biofluorescence is likely functioning in anuran communication, bringing an exciting new angle to explore.
