The family Caeciliidae underwent substantial taxonomic revision in Wilkinson et al. (2011). These species are generally slender, some quite large (up to 1.5 m in Caecilia thompsoni) and vary from dark bluish slate to light gray in color with visible annuli.

Much of the natural history and biology of this fossorial family is unknown.
