Range Description

This species is known only from one locality at 1,100 m asl within the Kon Cha Rang area, An Khe District, Gia Lai Province, Viet Nam (Orlov 2008). Further surveys are warranted to determine its actual range and elevation boundaries, as they likely exceed what is currently known. For example, habitat contiguous with that of the species' known locality occurs in adjacent parts of Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Gia Lai Provinces, and its presence is expected there also, therefore its range has been projected beyond known sites to include these areas of suitable habitat. The species has an estimated extent of occurrence of 6,927 km2, which likely represents only two threat-defined locations.

Habitat and Ecology

This species inhabits steep, rocky terrain within the valleys of cascading streams surrounded by broad-leaved evergreen vegetation (Orlov 2008). Much of its reproductive biology and ecology remain unknown, however it is expected to have a free-living aquatic larval stage, as do other Rhacophorus for which the reproductive strategy is known.

Very little is known about the species' population size or trends, except that it was described from only three individuals (Orlov 2008). The species may be in decline if it occurs outside well-protected areas, where forest encroachment associated with agriculture is ongoing.

Population Trend

Major Threats

Forest encroachment by both small-holder and commercial agricultural plantations is likely a major threat to the habitat of this species (T. Nguyen pers. comm. Jan 2015).

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
This species has not been recorded from any protected areas, but part of its range is likely to include Kon Ka Kinh National Park (Orlov, 2007), An Toan Nature Reserve, and Kon Cha Rang Nature Reserve.

Conservation Needed
Protection of this species forest habitat is required.

Research Needed
Addressing the lack of data is the first step towards ensuring this species' long-term survival; more information is needed on its life history, range, abundance, and threats.

Red List Status

Vulnerable (VU)

Listed as Vulnerable as this species' estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) is only 6,927 km2, and consists of only two threat-defined locations. Both the quality of its habitat and the size of its population are estimated to be in decline.
