From the IUCN Red List Species Account:

Range Description

This species is restricted to the San Martín and Santo Marta volcanoes in Los Tuxtlas, coastal Veracruz, Mexico, between 100-1,300 m asl. Its extent of occurrence is 1,735 km2 and its area of occupancy is 1,255 km2.

Habitat and Ecology

It is a terrestrial and fossorial species that lives in leaf-litter in lowland wet forest. It is not very tolerant of habitat disturbance. Breeding takes place by direct development.

Population

It is a fairly abundant species however, due to ongoing decline in the extent and quality of habitat, the population is suspected to be decreasing.

Population Trend

decreasing

Major Threats

The main threat is deforestation caused by expanding subsistence farming, human settlements and logging. Much of the lower forest on San Martín has been denuded (J. Mendelson pers. comm. 2007).

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
It occurs in Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve, which affords a degree of protection.

Conservation Needed
There is a need for more effective management of this reserve.

Red List Status

Endangered (EN)

Rationale

Listed as Endangered because its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 1,735 km2, it is known from fewer than five locations, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat in southern Veracruz, Mexico.

Taxonomic Notes

There is a question as to whether both Pseudoeurycea orchileucos and Pseudoeurycea orchimelas are distinct, valid species.
