Range Description

This species is known only from the Kaokoveld and Waterberg areas of northern and northwestern Namibia, where it occurs up to at least 1,500 m Asl. Although endemic to Namibia, it may also occupy similar arid and semi-arid habitats in southern Angola (Herrmann and Branch 2013).

Habitat and Ecology

Nothing is known regarding its habitat and ecology, although it presumably lives in semi-arid and arid habitats and breeds in temporary waterbodies.

Population

There is no information on its population status.

Population Trend

unknown

Major Threats

There is no information on major threats to this species.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
Relevant conservation measures for this species are unknown.

Research Needed
Further research is required into the taxonomy, to determine whether or not it is a valid species. More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, natural history, and threats.

Red List Status

Data Deficient (DD)

Rationale

Listed as Data Deficient in view of continuing doubts as to its taxonomic validity, and the limited information about its distribution, population trends and ecology.

Taxonomic Notes

The validity of this species is in question. It has variously been considered as a subspecies of both Poyntonophrynus dombensis and P. fenoulheti, and Channing (pers. comm.) considers that it might be a synonym of P. hoeschi. Tandy (pers. comm.) considers that it is probably a synonym of P. dombensis.
