Rana tlaloci

Subgenus: Pantherana
family: Ranidae
Taxonomic Notes: This species was placed in the genus Lithobates by Frost et al. (2006). However, Yuan et al. (2016, Systematic Biology, doi: 10.1093/sysbio/syw055) showed that this action created problems of paraphyly in other genera. Yuan et al. (2016) recognized subgenera within Rana for the major traditional species groups, with Lithobates used as the subgenus for the Rana palmipes group. AmphibiaWeb recommends the optional use of these subgenera to refer to these major species groups, with names written as Rana (Aquarana) catesbeiana, for example.

Range Description

The historical range of this species was the Valley of Mexico at Xochimilco, and probably Chalco, and maybe in the eastern state of Mexico, central Mexico.

Population Trend

Major Threats

The rapid and intense growth of Mexico City with its high rate of urbanization has caused the disappearance of the only known suitable habitats for this species.

Conservation Actions

It seems that no individuals of this species survive in the wild, but an intensive survey is needed to check all the possible localities where this species could occur. The Mexican government has placed this species in the "Endangered" category.

Red List Status

Critically Endangered (CR)

Listed as Critically Endangered because its Extent of Occurrence is less than 100 km2, its distribution is severely fragmented, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat around Mexico City.
