Description
This species is robust and has a large body. The canthus is sharp, and the tympanum is elliptical. There are 5-6 vomerine teeth. The tips of the fingers and toes are dilated. The hindlimb webbing is moderate. The skin on the back has various-sized warts. The mean snout to vent length for both males (range 93-126) and females (range 111-140) is 117 mm. A subgular vocal sac and a pair of vocal openings are located on the inner sides of the mouth. Males have a throat and venter covered with granules and nuptials that are poorly developed and contain white spinules.

R. subaspera Is found on Amamioshima and Kakeromajima Islands in Japan. It inhabits hillsides or mountainous regions.

Life History, Abundance, Activity, and Special Behaviors
Approximately 1,300 eggs are laid by each female. The eggs are brown and with a diameter of 2.0-2.5 mm. The mating call is one note that lasts for 0.5 seconds. This species breeds from late April to late August near small pools on forest trails and muddy riverbeds. This species eats insects, snails, and crabs.

Comments
This species is often thought to be part of the genus Babina because of its elongated first metacarpal.
