From the IUCN Red List Species Account:

Range Description

This species is endemic to the western and northern parts of Sulawesi in Indonesia. It ranges between 150–1,700 m asl (upper limit on Mount Gandangdewata).

Habitat and Ecology

It is an aquatic species that occurs in stony, highland streams in closed-canopy forest. It presumably breeds in streams.

It appears to be common in suitable habitat. However, due to ongoing decline in the extent and quality of habitat, the population is suspected to be decreasing.

Population Trend

Major Threats

Forest loss is taking place caused by oil palm and small-scale agriculture (especially recent rapid increase in corn growing) in the lowlands, as well as logging concessions which also go up into the highlands including on Mount Gandangdewata. Artisanal gold mining is known to be taking place in the streams within Lantu Wildlife Reserve (M. Kusrini and A. Hamidy pers. comm. May 2017).

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
This species occurs in a number of protected areas, including Lantu Wildlife Reserve, Gunung Lombobatang Natural Reserve, and Lore Lindu and Bogani-Nani-Wartbone National Parks.

Research Needed
Studies on distribution, population status, and trends are needed.

Red List Status

Least Concern (LC)

Listed as Least Concern in view of its relatively wide distribution and presumed large population.

Taxonomic Notes

A recent expedition to the eastern peninsula of Sulawesi recorded a species that is presumably closely related to Occidozyga semipalmata, however due to issues regarding its generic position, it remains undescribed (Iskandar et al. 2011).
