Range Description

This species is endemic to the southern Western Ghats of India. It is known from Srivilliputhur, Indira Ghandi National Park, Kalakad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (in Tamil Nadu), and Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, Ponmudi Hills and Athirimala (all in Kerala). It has an altitudinal range of 600-1,000m asl.

Habitat and Ecology

It is a terrestrial species associated with hill streams in primary wet evergreen and semi-evergreen tropical forests and swamps, and is not present in secondary forest or modified habitats. Breeding takes place on wet rocks, and the larvae are found on wet rock surfaces next to streams.

Population

It is locally uncommon, and believed to be declining.

Population Trend

decreasing

Major Threats

The main threat is the loss of forested areas through conversion to agricultural land (including coffee and tea plantations), and the harvesting of wood and timber by local people for subsistence purposes. Road construction, especially in Ponmudi and surroundings, is an additional threat to the habitat of this species.

Conservation Actions

It has been recorded from Kalakad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve and Indira Ghandi National Park (in Tamil Nadu), and Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary (in Kerala). It has been included in field studies by Ravichandran (1995-1997) and Biju (1997-present). It is protected by national legislation.

Red List Status

Endangered (EN)

Rationale

Listed as Endangered because its Extent of Occurrence is less than 5,000 km2, its distribution is severely fragmented, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat.
