Range Description

This species is widespread in Taiwan, Province of China, below 1,800m asl.

Habitat and Ecology

It is found at low to medium altitude, in unpolluted hill streams. It breeds in mountain streams or rivers in relatively open areas. Egg masses are deposited directly in water, and no foam nests are produced.


It is a common species.

Major Threats

Habitat destruction and degradation are localized threats to this species, in particular agriculture and infrastructure development. It is also collected for consumption locally.

Conservation Actions

The range of this species overlaps with a number of protected areas on the island. It is a Class II protected species in Taiwan, Province of China.

Least Concern (LC)


Listed as Least Concern in view of its relatively wide distribution, presumed large population, and because it is unlikely to be declining fast enough to qualify for listing in a more threatened category.
