Range Description

This species occurs on and around the Volcán Pico de Orizaba, on the Volcán Cofre de Perote, both in the montanous central region of Veracruz and from the slopes of Volcán La Malinche on the Tlaxcala-Puebla border in Mexico (Solano-Zavaleta et al. 2009). However, it is possible that subpopulations of Volcán Cofre de Perote belong to Pseudoeurycea melanomolga, a closely related species (E. Pineda and J.L. Aguilar-López pers. comm. Red List Assessment Workshop 2014). The species occurs between 2,250-4,250 m asl, at higher elevations than any other salamander (Solano-Zavaleta et al. 2009). Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 6,139 km2 and its area of occupancy (AOO) is 1,851 km2.

Habitat and Ecology

This species lives terrestrially in pine-oak forest and bunchgrass above the treeline, and does tolerate some level of habitat disturbance. It can be found most of the time hidden in burrows or under rotten logs or big rocks (Solano-Zavaleta et al. 2009). It breeds by direct development and is not dependent upon water.

Population

Although this has never been a common species, it has become increasingly rare. Due to an ongoing decline in the extent and quality of habitat, the population is suspected to be decreasing.

Major Threats

The habitat of this species has been heavily disturbed at lower elevations, especially due to logging. It might be more secure at higher elevations where human impacts (logging, agricultural activities, urbanisation and increased fire risk) are less severe.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
This species occurs in Pico de Orizaba National Park and Cofre de Perote National Park (but there are doubts about the identity of populations inhabiting the latter) and in La Malinche National Park. It is protected by Mexican law under the "Special Protection" category (Pr).

Conservation Needed
Habitat protection of the forests where this species is found is vital.

Research Needed
Further taxonomic research is required to clarify the identity of the subpopulations on Volcán Cofre de Perote.

Red List Status

Vulnerable (VU)

Rationale

Listed as Vulnerable because its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 6,139 km2, its area of occupancy (AOO) is 1,851 km2, it occurs in fewer than 10 threat-defined locations, and there is a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its forest habitat in Mexico.
