Range Description

This species occurs in southeastern Antioquia, eastern Caldas and northern Tolima departments, in the northern part of the Cordillera Central of Colombia, between 2,400–3,000 m asl. It may occur more widely. Its EOO is 13,137 kmand it occurs in three to five threat-defined locations.

Habitat and Ecology

An inhabitant of sub-páramo, this species is usually active among vegetation in the low stratum and is often found sheltering in epiphytes in forested areas, but it can also be found in open areas. It has not been recorded from disturbed forest or from anthropogenic habitats. It breeds by direct development.

Population

It is an uncommon species. Due to ongoing decline in the extent and quality of habitat, the population is suspected to be decreasing.

Population Trend

decreasing

Major Threats

The major threat to this species is habitat loss caused by deforestation for agricultural development (including livestock grazing).

Individuals from the Central Andean Cordillera tested negative for Bd  (Urbina and Galeano 2011), so its susceptibility to infection remains unknown.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
This species has been recorded in Reserva Forestal San Sebastian and in Sistema de Paramos Norandinos and Parque Nacional Natural El Nevado.

Conservation Needed
Formal habitat protection is urgently needed to secure the future survival of this species.

Research Needed
Research is needed to better determine its population size and trends and the impact of the current threats on its population.

Red List Status

Vulnerable (VU)

Rationale

This species has a restricted distribution—extent of occurrence (EOO) of 13,137 km2—in the Central Cordillera of Colombia and occurs in three to five locations. There is continuing decline in the extent and quality of habitat due to agricultural activities, livestock and urban expansion. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable.
