Description
Ca. 19-22 mm. Tympanum distinct, about 1/2-4/5 of eye diameter. Tibiotarsal articulation reaches the eye. Four fingers, the inner reduced, and 5 toes. Skin on the back usually smooth. Back of adults can be reddish brown with more or less symmetrical dark brown spots (also on the flanks). Venter grey-blue with black marbling, throat blackish (Glaw and Vences 2007).

Distribution and Habitat

Located in Marojejy (Glaw and Vences 2007). Occurs from sea level up to 1300m asl (Glaw and Vences 2008).

Known from the leaf litter of high altitude primary forest (Glaw and Vences 2007) and also in somewhat secondary habitats, including forest edges (Glaw and Vences 2008).

Life History, Abundance, Activity, and Special Behaviors
Habits: Its breeding biology is unknown, but is likely to be similar to that of Stumpffia gimeli, which has terrestrial nests that contain non-feeding larvae (Glaw and Vences 2008).

Trends and Threats
Listed as data deficient in view of continuing uncertainty as to its taxonomic status. Though it occurs in many protected areas, its forest habitat is receding due to subsistence agriculture, timber extraction, charcoal manufacture, invasive spread of eucalyptus, livestock grazing and expanding human settlements (Glaw and Vences 2008).
