This species is found in the Amazonian lowlands to lower Andean foothills of central Peru to Bolivia and extreme western Brazil. In Peru, it is known in the Rio Ucayali drainage, the Rio Madre de Dios drainage up to elevation 365 m, Rio Manui between Rio Panagua and Rlo Cachiri to 400 m elevation, Rio Cosfiipata to elevation 1270 m (Duellman 1978).

It occurs in the protected areas of Parque Nacional Manu and Tambopata-Candamo National Reserve (Madre de Dios) in Peru, and in Parque Nacional da Serra do Divisor, Acre, in Brazil.

Pristimantis toftae is found in the lowland wet tropical rain forests; it has been reported in the leaf litter or logs by day, and perched on foliage and branches up to 1 m above ground at night (Duellman 1978).

Comments
The specific epithet is named after Catherine A. Toft, who first discovered the species at Finca Panguana and collected all but six of the specimens used in the original description by Duellman (1978).
