Description
Phyllonastes lochites is differentiated by the following combination of characters: digit tips are pointed and lack papillae at digit tips; dull gray venter; dorsum, side of head, and anterior flanks colored gray to brown; inner tarsal tubercle present; complete ear (tympanic annulus, cavum tympanicum, and plectrum present), truncate snout, and no shortened fifth toe. P. lochites, whose SVL reaches 14.9 mm, has a head which is as wide as body and slightly wider than long. Snout short, eye to nostril distance is less than eye length. Temporal region swollen. No supratympanic fold, ear separated from eye by distance equal to tympanum length. Prevomerine teeth and odontophores absent. Skin of dorsum finely shagreened with a few moderate-sized warts on flanks. A single subarticular tubercle on finger IV. Tips of digits lack pads or discs and are somewhat swollen and pointed. Relative finger lengths are: (IIV) Coloration in preservative: Dorsal gray coloration with rusty-reddish brown stripe down center of back. Two black suprainguinal spots. Labial bars obscure with an obscure brown spot anterior to eye. Dark brown stripe on anterior edge of upper arm and a similar stripe on inner edge of forearm.

P. lochites was first described as Euparkarella lochites by Lynch (1976) but later synonymized by Heyer (1977) and Lynch (1986).

Only known from the type locality in the Cordillera del Condor in Ecuador.

Life History, Abundance, Activity, and Special Behaviors
Holotype had large yellow ovarian eggs and was collected during the day in the leaf litter in a cloud forest.
