Only known from the type locality: "Padang, Sumatra", Indonesia (Taylor 1965), until surveys in 2017 (Harapan et al. 2020), where Ichthyophis elongatus was found in Tanah Datar District (Sungayang), Pasaman District (Jorong Simpang), Solok District (Koto Anau), many in human disturbed areas like rotten vegetation, paddy fields, trash dumps or in gardens under pots. In addition Harapan et al. (2020) conducted habitat modeling (MaxEnt) which showed suitable areas about 500-1000 m a.s.l. and 100-150 m from rivers throughout the Barisan Mountains and along the border of West and North Sumatra.
