From the IUCN Red List Species Account:

Range Description

This species is known from north-east and western Myanmar, extreme northern Viet Nam and Gaoligongshan in Yunnan (Tengchong, Baoshan and Lushui Counties), China, from 1,900-2,500m asl. It probably occurs more widely than current records suggest.

Habitat and Ecology

It inhabits forested mountain areas, and probably also occurs in the surrounding farmland. It is a stream-breeding amphibian.

Population

This species is rare and is seldom found.

Population Trend

decreasing

Major Threats

Forest loss due to agricultural expansion is an ongoing threat.

Conservation Actions

The range of the species includes some protected areas: in China it is known from Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve, and both of the populations in Myanmar are within protected areas.

Red List Status

Near Threatened (NT)

Rationale

Listed as Near Threatened since the species depends on streams in montane forest, and so its Area of Occupancy is probably not much greater than 2,000 km2, and the extent and quality of its habitat is declining, thus making the species close to qualifying for Vulnerable.

Taxonomic Notes

Bufo burmanus was synonymized with B. pageoti by Dubois and Ohler (1999). The genus Torrentophryne (Yang, Liu and Rao 1996) was synonymized with Bufo by Liu et al. (2000).
