Elachistocleis ovalis (Schneider, 1799)
Northern Oval Frog | family: Microhylidae subfamily: Gastrophryninae genus: Elachistocleis |
Taxonomic Notes: This ancient name (1799) lacks type material and there is no type locality. Despite wide usage it should be considered an invalid name and not used, with specimens refereed to Elachistocleis sp.(Jowers MJ, Othman SN, Borzee A, Rivas GA, Sanchez-Ramirez S, Auguste RJ, Downie JR, Read M, Murphy JC 2021 Unraveling unique island colonization events in Elachistocleis frogs:phylogeography, cryptic divergence, and taxonomical implications. Organisms Diversity & Evolution https://doi.org/10.1007/s13127-021-00487-y). Specimens formerly assigned to this taxon from Trinidad and Tobago and from Venezuela have been placed in a new taxon E. nigrogularis by Jowers et al. 2021. Pending revision AmphibiaWeb continues to use the name E. ovalis. |
