Range Description

This species is known from the northwestern slope of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in Colombia, from 1,500–2,600 m asl. Its EOO is 55 km2 and it occurs in two threat-defined locations.

Habitat and Ecology

It is an arboreal inhabitant of forested areas, but it has also been found in riparian forests and at the edge of rural roads (Rueda-Solano et al. 2016, L.A. Rueda-Solano pers. comm. 2016). It breeds by direct development.

Population

It is relatively common. Between 2008 and 2014, 13 individuals were recorded during a survey at the experimental station of San Lorenzo in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, Northern Colombia (Rueda-Solano et al. 2016). At the same localities in 2015–2016, however, the species was collected more frequently (L.A. Rueda-Solano pers. comm. 2016). Due to ongoing decline in the extent and quality of habitat, the population is suspected to be decreasing.

Population Trend

decreasing

Major Threats

The main threats to the species are agriculture, mainly coffee plantations and livestock.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
It is present in the private protected area Reserva El Dorado.

Conservation Needed
Improved habitat protection is required at sites where this species is known to occur.

Research Needed
More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, natural history, and threats.

Red List Status

Endangered (EN)

Rationale

Listed as Endangered because of its extent of occurrence (EOO) of 55 km2, it occurs in two threat-defined locations, and there is a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta due to agricultural activities and livestock.
