Range Description

This species is known only from three lowland localities on Borneo: Lawas in north-eastern Sarawak, Malaysia; Kota Samarahan in western Sarawak, Malaysia; and Sinkawang in western Kalimantan, Indonesia and its elevational range is estimated to be 0–200 m asl.

Habitat and Ecology

This species is presumed to occur in tropical moist forest, where the adults are likely to be subterranean. It is also presumably oviparous with terrestrial eggs and aquatic larvae.

There is no information on the population status of this species, which is known only from three specimens. There have been no recent records as there have been no dedicated surveys to locate the species.

Population Trend

Major Threats

There is no information on threats to this species. Because the species is likely to be sensitive to environmental changes, suspected threats are deforestation and any changes to the above ground habitat that would affect the soil chemistry and moisture content.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
This species does not occur in any protected areas, and there are no conservation actions currently in place for it.

Research Needed
Genetic analyses are needed to confirm the taxonomic distinctiveness of this species. More information is also needed on its population size, distribution and trends, life history and ecology, and threats.

Red List Status

Data Deficient (DD)

Listed as Data Deficient in view of continuing doubts as to its taxonomic validity, extent of occurrence, population status, ecological requirements and threats.

Taxonomic Notes

The taxonomic distinctiveness of this species needs confirmation. Historically, all unstriped Ichthyophis from Southeast Asia were assigned to this species (Taylor 1968).
