Range Description

This species is known from two localities very close to each other within Parque Nacional Natural Munchique on the western slopes of the Cordillera Occidental of the Andes in Cauca Department, Colombia, at 2,190m asl. Field trips to comparable habitat south of the type locality have not found it, but it is likely to occur a little more widely than is currently known.

Habitat and Ecology

It occurs on low vegetation above forest streams. Since it is only known from the edge of streams it is thought to be able to tolerate some disturbance of the forest as long as the forest edge by the stream remains intact. Its breeding habits have not been observed, although it is known to have large larvae that take a long time to develop.

Population

It has been collected only twice in the past 25 years, despite many surveys of the area, suggesting that it is a rare species.

Population Trend

unknown

Major Threats

The major threat to this species is habitat loss and degradation due to the cultivation of illegal crops in the park, in particular the water pollution arising from the chemical sprays used on the illegal crops.

Conservation Actions

It occurs within Parque Nacional Natural Munchique, affording its habitat some degree of protection.

Red List Status

Data Deficient (DD)

Rationale

Listed as Data Deficient in view of continuing uncertainties as to its extent of occurrence, status and ecological requirements.

Taxonomic Notes

This species was previously within the genus Hyla but has recently been moved to the resurrected genus Hyloscirtus (Faivovich et al. 2005).
