Range Description

This species is known from the type locality of "Yuraccyacu on the Tambo-Valle del Apurimac trail", at 2,620 m asl (Duellman and Trueb 1988) and from Chiquintirca, down to 1,800 m asl (G. Chavez pers. comm. April 2017), both in Ayacucho Region, Peru. Its range has an EOO of 310 km2 and all individuals are considered to occur at two-threat defined locations.

Habitat and Ecology

Its habitat is the cloud forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes. The eggs are presumably carried on the back of the female, but it is not known whether or not breeding is by direct development or larval development.

Population

The species is common at the Chiquintirca site (G. Chavez pers. comm. April 2017).

Population Trend

unknown

Major Threats

There is ongoing degradation and destruction of the species' habitat by small-scale agriculture (including ricoto, which is intensively farmed at the lower elevations of the species' range), cattle grazing, and logging (A. Catenazzi pers. comm. April 2017).

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
It is not known to occur in any protected areas.

Conservation Needed
This species would benefit from improved habitat protection at sites where it is known to occur.

Research Needed
Further research is needed to improve understanding of the species' population size, distribution and trends.

Red List Status

Data Deficient (DD)

Rationale

Listed as Endangered because of its extent of occurrence (EOO) of 310 km2, it occurs in two threat-defined locations, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat in the Peruvian Andes.

Taxonomic Notes

This genus has recently been moved from the family Hylidae (Faivovich et al. 2005).
