Range Description

This species is found in the area of Nudo de Pasco in the Regions of Pasco, Junín and Huánuco, central Peruvian Andes. It is recorded at elevations of between 3,000 and 4,020 m asl.

Habitat and Ecology

It is a terrestrial species of dry puna grasslands and shrublands and it is quite common in traditionally cultivated arable land. Individuals are commonly found beneath stones in damp areas by day. The eggs undergo direct development into froglets in the pouch (Duellman and Trueb 2015).

Population

It is relatively abundant within its localized distribution. Over the course of one person-day seven individuals were found at the type locality (R. von May pers. comm. April 2017). Its population is considered to be stable.

Population Trend

stable

Major Threats

There appear to be no major threats to the species. It can occur in low intensity agricultural areas.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
It has been recorded in Pui Pui Protection Forest (Lehr et al. 2017). There are no conservation measures needed for this species.

Research Needed
Further taxonomic work is needed to confirm the status of the Huánuco subpopulation. More information is needed on its distribution, population status, and trends.

Red List Status

Least Concern (LC)

Rationale

Least Concern because, although the distribution is somewhat limited—extent of occurrence (EOO) of 8,934 km2—, there are no current threats, the species adapts to disturbed habitats, and it occurs in a protected area.

Taxonomic Notes

The subpopulation from Huánuco likely comprises an undescribed species (R. von May pers. comm. April 2017). However, it is included in this assessment until it is formally described.
