Range Description

This species can be found in the northeastern Amazon of Peru (Loreto Region) and southern Amazonian Colombia (Leticia, Amazonas Department). It is present below 200 m asl. It is likely to be found in neighbouring Brazil.

Habitat and Ecology

It has been recorded from both leaf-litter and bromeliads in primary tropical moist lowland rainforest. It is a phytotelmic species that breeds by direct development. Eggs are deposited in bromeliad axils. It is not present in degraded habitats.

Population

It is relatively common in the leaf litter (Lynch 2005) and is presumed to have a stable population given its widespread range and remaining suitable habitat.

Population Trend

stable

Major Threats

Large areas of suitable habitat are remaining. There is some localized habitat loss to general human activities such as collection of wood, logging, and agriculture (crops, livestock etc.). Over harvesting of bromeliads might lead to some localized declines.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions
In Peru, it is present in several protected areas, including Pacaya-Samiria Reserve and Alpahuayo Mishana Reserve. In Colombia, it is present in Parque Nacional Natural Amacayacu.

Research Needed
Further research on this species' distribution, population size and trends is recommended.

Red List Status

Least Concern (LC)

Rationale

Listed as Least Concern in view of its wide distribution and presumed large population.

Taxonomic Notes

Ortega-Andrade and Valencia (2010) provided a record of Chiasmocleis tridactyla (as Syncope tridactyla) for Lorocachi, Pastaza, Ecuador. These specimens might actually correspond to Chiasmocleis carvalhoi (Peloso et al. 2014), but further examination is required.
