Species Description: Cope, E. (1874) On some Batrachia and Nematognathi brought from the upper Amazon by Prof. Orton. Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 26, 120–137.
 
Etymology: The genus name Bolitoglossa originates from a combination of the Latin words “bolito”, meaning “unusual”, and “glossa” meaning “tongue” (Batista et al. 2014).

The species epithet, “altamazonica”, refers to the Amazonian basin in which this species was found (Cusi et al. 2020).
