Ambystoma mexicanum (Shaw & Nodder, 1798)
Mexican Axolotl
Subgenus: Heterotriton
family: Ambystomatidae
genus: Ambystoma
Species Description: Shaw, G., Nodder, F. P. (1798). The Naturalist’s Miscellany; or Coloured Figures of Natural Objects Drawn and Described Immediately from Nature. Volume 9. London

Etymology: The genus, "Ambystoma," is a contraction for "anabystoma," which means "to cram into the mouth." The genus name has been erroneously attributed to the Greek words "amblys" and "stoma" that together mean "blunt mouth" (Smith 1989b).

The species epithet, “mexicanum”, refers to where the species is found in the wild.
