There are three orders of amphibians in the world: Anura, Caudata, and Gymnophiona. The AmphibiaWeb database currently contains 6,439 amphibian species (Jan 5, 2009) , of which 5,687 are Anura (frogs and toads), 576 are Caudata (newts and salamanders), and 176 are Gymnophiona (caecilians). The numbers of species have grown rapidly. Since 1985 the total number of recognized species has increased by over 60%.
