Description
F 33 mm. Tympanum distinct, ca. 2/3 of eye diameter. Tibiotarsal articulation reaches posterior edge of eye. Fingertips distinctly enlarged, finger 2 slightly shorter than finger 4. Skin on the back almost smooth. Back greenish with an irregular pattern of shorter light brown lines and spots. A very distinct dorsolateral colour border, running from snout tip to inguinal region. Just above this colour border a very thin white line from eye to inguinal region. Side of head and flanks dark (Glaw and Vences 2007).

Similar species: Differs from Plethodontohyla notosticta by having a distinctly shorter first finger (length of first finger shorter than inner metacarpal tubercle vs. length of first finger longer than inner metacarpal tubercle), less enlarged fingertips and by the greenish dorsal colouration (vs. brownish). P. mihanika has longer hindlimbs (Glaw and Vences 2007).

Distribution and Habitat

Country distribution from AmphibiaWeb's database: Madagascar

View distribution map in BerkeleyMapper.
This species is reliably known only from the holotype, collected in 2005 at Camp Simpona, at 1326 m asl in Marojejy National Park, northeastern Madagascar (Vences and Andreone 2008).

Life History, Abundance, Activity, and Special Behaviors
Habits: The holotype was captured on the ground during the day close to the tree line. The large eggs found in the holotype indicate that reproduction occurs in the rainy season (Glaw and Vences 2007).

Trends and Threats
The only known specimen was collected in a well-protected area, the Marojejy National Park. It is possible that, if this species occurs more widely, it is present in some areas where it is at risk from habitat loss. Research is needed to determine the limits of its distribution, and its ecological requirements (Vences and Andreone 2008).
