Description

Proceratophrys laticeps is very similar in appearance to P. appendiculata and P. boiei, although P. laticeps can be distinguished by a wider head (Izecksohn and Peixoto 1981).

Distribution and Habitat

This species occurs in the lowland forests, of Espirito Santo and Bahia States, Brazil, up to 500m asl (Izecksohn and Peixoto 1981). It is found in the forest-floor leaf-litter of both primary and secondary forest, and breeds in small forest brooks (IUCN 2008).

Life History, Abundance, Activity, and Special Behaviors

Proceratophrys tadpoles develop in slow-flowing water (Peixoto et al. 1981).

Proceratophrys laticeps has been found sympatrically with P. paviotii and P. boiei, vocalizing in sandy streambeds (Cruz et al. 2005). Males congregate to call (Izecksohn and Peixoto 1996).

Larva
The tadpole has an oval, depressed body, with a tail length almost twice the body length (de Sá and Langone 2002). The mouth is ventral, with an emarginate oral disc, two folds on the lower lip, a single row of marginal papillae with a pronounced rostral gap, keratinized and serrated jaw sheaths, and a LTRF of 2(2)/3(1) (de Sá and Langone 2002). Fins are low and caudal (de Sá and Langone 2002). The spiracle is sinistral and opens mid-laterally (de Sá and Langone 2002). The vent tube and opening are dextral (de Sá and Langone 2001). The tadpole of P. laticeps has been described as similar to that of P. boiei by Peixoto et al. (1981). However, larval P. laticeps have a narrower body and tail, particularly in earlier stages of development, as well as an acuminate tail tip and a lower lip with slightly marked infolds (Peixoto et al. 1981).
