Description M 26 mm. Dorsum yellow-brown, yellow dorsolateral stripes present, sometimes extending onto shanks (Glaw and Vences 2007).
Similar species: H. carbonei is the closest relative of H. betsileo and both species are very similar in morphology and colouration. Reliable distinction only by calls or genetically (Glaw and Vences 2007).
Distribution and Habitat
Country distribution from AmphibiaWeb's database: Madagascar
Tsingy de Bemaraha (Antranopasasy), Kirindy (below 200 m asl); Montagne dAmbre (900 m asl). Presumably occurs between these locations, where habitat is suitable (Raxworthy et al. 2008). Found in dry forest (in the west) and rainforest habitats (in the north) (Raxworthy et al. 2008).Life History, Abundance, Activity, and Special Behaviors Habits: Swamps and ponds in western and northern Madagascar. At Kirindy, this species starts calling late at night only, while H. tricolor calls early in the evening (J. Glos, pers. comm.). Seems to be quite localized (Glaw and Vences 2007).
Calls: Similar to those of H. betsileo, but note duration distinctly longer (Glaw and Vences 2007).
Breeding occurs in both temporary and permanent ponds (Raxworthy et al. 2008).
Trends and Threats Not common, and declining. Has not been found outside forest. It occurs in two protected areas: Parc National Tsingy de Bemaraha and Parc National de Montagne d'Ambre (Raxworthy et al. 2008). Possible reasons for amphibian decline General habitat alteration and loss Habitat modification from deforestation, or logging related activities Intensified agriculture or grazing
