Description
A large (Males 39–54 mm, females 48–58 mm) uniformly tawny to reddish frog from clearings in forests in central Africa. Dorsum uniform, but with a dark canthal band which continues behind the eye. Eye golden green. There is a colour difference between the sexes, the females being more reddish than the males with ventral parts, hands and feet orange red.
Voice. – The voice has been described as a low sound, similar to knocking on wood.

A dweller of swamps, lakes and streams in the forest belt, often along large rivers. I have observed it near Kinshasa in very open bushland with no forest in the vicinity.

Life History, Abundance, Activity, and Special Behaviors
Development. – Males call from low branches and grass near water. Eggs are large and unpigmented like small peas, 11–19 together in a jelly placed on leaves above water. The tadpole is elongate . Tooth formula 1/3 or 1+1/3.
